Flowers have had specific meanings since Victorian times, the flower selection during Victorian times was limited and people used more symbols and gestures to communciate than words. Nowadays the meanings of flowers has no rules, people choose flowers because of a sentimental value, a nice perfume or a nice colour.
In Victorian times there was a lot more to a flower than just the botanical meaning. A red rose implied "love", a white rose pronounced "I am worthy" and a yellow rose indicated "jealousy".
Over the years we have worn flowers in our hair, spoken of flowers in our myths and stories and given them meanings. We have found beauty in their blooms and taken flowers as emblems and composed of them a language of our own.
All around the world the meaning of flowers has become a tradition for many, Asia honoured flowers with its own profound tradition. The daylily, which in England was said to indicate flirtation, in China symbolised fertility. Many of today's flowers such as chrysanthemums, wisteria and peonies have Asian origins!
